The installation Flowering backyard takes the form of a garden incorporating fragments of the paving patterns found in colonial courtyards, particularly those of the central cloister of the former Convent of Santo Domingo in Oaxaca, sculptural reinterpretations of vessels from the Mesoamerican world, and a diversity of medicinal, edible, and ritual plants commonly found in backyard gardens.

In both rural and urban contexts across Oaxaca, these plants are cultivated on rooftops, windowsills, corridors, and courtyards, often in recycled containers that once served as cleaning buckets, food containers, or other household vessels.

 

The garden is conceived as a space to be inhabited: a place for active leisure, conversation, and encounter.
